Alex Keen joined Keen Independent at its launch in 2011. In 2017, became the firm’s Chief Operating Officer and Senior Consultant.
As the Venue Manager/Production Manager at Mesa Community College, Alex Keen led venue operations, security procedures and project management for a new $18.5 million Performing Arts Center and supervised a team of 30 staff members. While teaching at Mesa Community College and Scottsdale Community College, Mr. Keen served as Adjunct Faculty instructing students on venue operations and production management. He has also worked in Boston, Southern Maine and Orlando, Florida in various venues.
Mr. Keen has extensive experience in arts and education management, as well as safety analysis and training, risk management, security management, facility management and project management. He was awarded a safety award for mitigating a major campus risk at Mesa Community College; and, has OSHA 30 certification, is an Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Certified Rigger and a graduate of the Venue Management School of International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM). Mr. Keen has also completed the IAVM Academy for Venue Safety and Security. He has comprehensive leadership training in leadership management, risk assessment tools, project management, translating vision into strategy, and legal issues in public sector through the Maricopa Community College District, and is a Trained Crowd Manager. He serves on the IAVM Venue Safety and Security Committee and IAVM University Committee and has been a member since 2014.
For Keen Independent’s disparity studies, workforce assessments and studies on arts and culture, Alex Keen has established data management protocols to ensure secure systems and quality control, and advancement of new technologies. His years managing large venues and directing teams for the Maricopa Community College District in Arizona, brings special operational and technical expertise to the Keen Independent team. Mr. Keen contributes in all areas of Keen Independent assignments and provides special capabilities in graphic design and photography.
While at Arizona State University, Alex Keen helped lead an economic development study for the City of Glendale, Arizona, which won a top award for excellence from the Arizona Chapter of the American Planning Association. Mr. Keen designed graphics for the City of Phoenix Homeowner’s Manual, the City of Phoenix Water Resources and Conservation website and Gillette Utility in Wyoming.
Alex Keen holds a Master of Science in Security Management with a concentration in Organizational Security from the University of Denver (4.0 GPA) and a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Urban Planning and Theater from Arizona State University (summa cum laude).
